Dealing with Stress

A lot of people probably don’t know, but I’ve been dealing with a lot of stress. Stress is awful. I never knew what it was a like until a few years ago. I’ve went through a few stages of it, but not too long ago it came back again.

I’m an author and I push myself like crazy. I also work 32 hours a week at a pretty physical job. And I work in the church A LOT. So, needless to say my life is insane, cause you throw in housework, social life, and being a wife, and you get a person who gets herself a bit crazy.

Everyone has my story. I mean, I’m sure not all of you has that much on your plate, but you may have other things you are balancing in life and sometimes we just plain out get stressed. Here’s some things that happened to me when I let this stuff get to me.

If you are having these signs PLEASE try to stop working yourself up.

  • Weird tightness in my chest (not exactly like a breathing problem, I knew it was anxiety of some kind)
  • Not sleeping well (my mind wouldn’t stop racing)
  • Jumpy and jittery feeling (I just recently went through this one, and had NO clue what it was! It reminded me of when I needed to eat, but I’d eat and it’d still be there)
  • Rash (Yeah that’s always a fun one. I didn’t know why that was there either, and I looked it up and it can be from stress)
  • Emotional distress (I have been this insane ride lately, and I was starting to worry a lot about myself)

Okay, now that you know some weird symptoms what do you DO to take care of it?

I’ve looked up some articles and there is TONS of advice about stress.

  • Exercise
  • Eating Healthy
  • Relaxing

I’m not really one of those articles, though all that is good. After going through some crazy stuff, I knew that I had to do something and fast for the sake of my own health.

What causes stress?

Yes, a lot of “stuff” going on and getting overwhelmed will cause this, but underline what is the source of stress?

For me it was blame.

I decided to go on another brain detox with a program I bought from Dr. Caroline Leaf. Though, I still had symptoms when I first started, I know its getting better. I asked God what toxic thought I should work on, and He immediately told me blame. And He told me who I was blaming for almost all of my emotional distress. Most of this stuff was because of an underlining problem. Stress about my marriage, my writing career, and my parents’ church.

I’d grown a pretty big tree of blame on all of this.

This blog isn’t exactly something I want to write about, but I hope it helps someone else. Blaming others, even if they honestly had a lot to do with your problem, is never right. It will only hurt YOU.

God showed me what the power of blame was doing to my life, and I could see this giant, ugly tree that literally was freaking scary. Then I saw a picture of God turning his back to this giant tree and covering it up completely. Then He told me, “Let’s grow forgiveness.”

This is only day 4 of the brain detox, and already I can tell I am losing blame in my heart. I can see that giant tree’s branches getting disintegrated day-by-day and this tree of forgiveness growing. This is the scripture I’m standing on, and if you’re dealing with blaming others I’d really, really advise you to stand on this scripture too.

Ephesians 4:32

32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

I’ll keep you guys updated as I go through this de-stressing in my life.

5 Ways to say “I Love You.”

I Love You.

Those three simple words have so much power, but what are some ways we can say it? Here’s a few tips!

1. Be there.

Sometimes all we need is someone there when we’re going through a hard time. A hand holding yours when you’re hurting. Someone to squeal with you when you accomplish a goal. Being there for someone is one of the strongest ways to say, “I Love You.”

2. Dance without Music

Grabbing that one you love and dancing with no music at all, can shout, “I love you!” Spontaneous dance always makes you feel closer, and will definitely bring a smile to both your faces.

3. Knowing when to talk and when to listen

Sometimes we just need to vent. When something has got us down, we need that ear to listen, and in doing that it can say, “I love you.” But, if your man or woman needs a word to lift them up, make sure you offer that encouragement.

4. Being Silly

Not taking every little thing so serious can scream, “I love you!” Telling them that everything is going to be okay in the morning, watching cat videos, hilarious posts, or listening to a stupid song can always lighten the mood. Laughing together always makes me feel loved.

5. Kisses for no reason

Everyone loves a good dipped kiss. Sweep up your man or woman and dip them into an extravagant kiss. A kiss can bring a bad mood right into a good mood. After a long day, pulling the one you love close and giving a tender kiss can really lighten the mood and whisper, “I love you.”

How to Stay Happy

What makes you happy?

If I had to make a list of things that make me happy here’s a few that would be on that list.

  1. Writing
  2. An encouraging word
  3. Someone asking about my life
  4. Late night silliness
  5. Doctor Who
  6. Hearing God speak
  7. Encouraging another
  8. Genuine anything

I was just talking to my sister about this yesterday, and I told her, “I just want to stay HAPPY. Every day!”

But problem with it, is there’s always ‘something’ trying to steal your happy. What is it?

(Points to head)

Thoughts that race in and out constantly like, “You’re never going to make it.” Or, “No one really cares about you.”

2 Corinthians 10:5

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

I saw that scripture and was like, YES! We demolish arguments! How many times do we ARGUE with ourselves? Those bad thoughts try to get the upper hand.

Have you ever been in a battle of wits?

My brother is really fast at comebacks, and if you get into a battle with him, he more in likely will win that battle.

So how do we NOT allow those arguments and things that come against the knowledge of God to slap us around?

Let’s read that last part: and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

That’s a lot of work. If I’m being straight up honest with you! Keeping track of all the stuff floating around in your head is not easy peasy one two cheesy. Its a commitment to protect your thought life. Ever since reading and learning about the brain, I’ve tried to watch my thought life and what I’m saying out of my mouth.

Wanna know how to stay happy?

  • Do things that make you happy
  • Stop contradicting your faith with doubt
  • Watch how you think and what you say
  • Focus on gratitude for EVERYTHING
  • Don’t look what you don’t have. Look at what’s yours.

One last thing here. So, on last Sunday during worship I get a vision. In this vision I see a dead tree that’s smoking. I’m looking at it, and thinking. “This doesn’t look very nice.” So I asked the Holy Spirit, “Why is it smoking?”

Suddenly the tree starts coming alive and blooming with leaves and flowers. BUT it’s still smoking. So I asked God, “Why is it still smoking?” Then He told me, “There’s a hot spring under it.”

Now what does that mean?

With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.
We can feel extremely dead and dry inside. That’s when we need to draw from the wells of salvation. Almost any Christian knows that we’ve been given the joy of the Lord among all the other fruit of the Spirit. So, what stops us? (Points to head again) Our brain likes to get in the way a lot.
Draw up your joy.

The Unedited Life

Face it we all edit.

All

Of

Us.

We edit what we wear. We edit what we do. We edit what we say.

Every single day we have what we call a “filter”. You also know when someone DOESN’T have one. We’ve all met those people who make us blush three shades of red, or even worse make us so angry we turn three shades of red, green, and purple!

We call them RUDE. BLUNT. Among other names.

That’s not really what this post is about. We edit some stuff out we should leave unfiltered.

Instead, we make excuses like

1. I don’t have time.

That is a huge one! The one thing I know as a writer is I DON’T HAVE TIME to write. But why do I? Because its my passion. Here’s a secret: you make time for what’s important to you. Don’t filter out your passions or dreams. You’ll regret it.

2. That’s embarrassing

So many things make us uncomfortable. Saying something really sweet to someone. Standing in front of a crowd and making a speech. Going out of our way to do something God told us to do years ago.

3. I’m not motivated.

I swear I hear this one the most. What IS motivation? Most the time motivation comes from having dreaming and goals. If you have no motivation you have to discover who you are. What makes you excited about life? If you don’t know, that’s okay, start trying stuff!

We edit the good and bad out sometimes. One thing I’ve learned with following God is just DO IT. I used to get worked up and freaked out when He’d tell me to do something. Now I’m like, “Alright. Let’s see what happens.”

In fact.

It’s fun.

Don’t edit everything out of your life. Live. Make mistakes. Do something crazy. You can always pass your script to an editor tomorrow to clean up your grammar mess.

Faith Works Both Ways: Ask and it will be given

faith

Do you know you can have faith for poverty?

This morning God and I were having a conversation, and He was talking to me about faith. He said, “Do you know faith works both ways?” I was really interested in that! So I said, “What do you mean, God?”

He said, “You can have more faith in poverty than My blessing in your life.”

WOW

We go through life “expecting” certain things, and what is faith?

Hebrews 11:1

11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

  • What is the substance that is holding you? Is your mind full of expectation for disaster, sickness, poverty, bad relationships etc. Do we actually say out of our mouths, “I never have money.” Or, “Every one of my friends stab me in the back.”

We are speaking FAITH.

There is always a distortion to the truth, right?

Our problem is that we look at what’s in front of our face right now. That sickness. That bad relationship. That depression. We don’t realize that we literally call those things that be not as though they were.

Proverbs 18:21

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

If our tongue has the power of LIFE or DEATH, what is your tongue saying? What fruit is showing up in your life? God has had me on a journey with faith in the area of wealth. I was watching a video by Caroline Leaf at church the other day, and I realized that it wasn’t my “asking or believing” that was hindering me, it was my “receiving.”

 feed-your-faith
Matt 7:7

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

It’s time to let go of the past. Let go of disappointments where you asked before and didn’t get it. Were you fully expecting it to actually manifest in your life? If we are double minded it says in James 1:8 that we shouldn’t expect to receive anything from the Lord!

Obviously, how we process and think is important to God. He is a God of reward. Don’t believe me?

Hebrews 11:6

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
We have to
  1. Believe that He exist.
  2. Believe He rewards those who earnestly seek Him

I encourage you to stretch your faith. Observe what kind of faith you’re in. Do you have more faith in the negative things that are happening? Or are you fully expecting that God rewards those who seek Him?

Life is like a Redraft

I-love-grammar-GRUMPY-CAT

So, lately I’ve been re-writing one of my old novels and creating more of a connection with “one” character instead of fifty thousand. Then this thought hits me. Life is like a redraft.

Why do I say that?

Well, you get this basic story that you write down in your head. You plan something out, you have a vague notion of where you want to go with a book. Sounds a lot like life doesn’t it?

Then you hit the redraft.

You realize there are pieces missing, or things are choppy, or there’s no connection with things/people in your life. The redraft becomes much more challenging.

Life can hit you with that redraft, where before the story was exciting, now it feels like a chore. You’re not sure if you should take road A. or road B. with your life/story, and you realize that one decision could make or break everything.

Whenever I hit the redraft in any book I’m writing I have a love/hate relationship with it.

1. I love it because that means the story is getting closer to being released.

2. I hate it because I need time and energy to think what to add or delete.

3. I love it because I see things progress.

4. I hate it because sometimes I get stuck on a single paragraph.

Sound like life? Yeah!

Sometimes we stare at the same problem over and over and wonder how to fix it. How can we delete this scene without causing the other scenes to fall apart? Should we move? Should we stay? Should we go to college? Should we focus on a relationship?

All these questions follow us around, bugging us. It takes energy to redraft your life. I know people who when it comes to the redraft get discouraged (writing and life) and sometimes they just choose to ignore it all together. Put it on the shelf.

life-story-958x700

One problem though.

Your story will never be told if you sit it on the shelf and ignore it. (I’m talking about life and writing in one here.)

Don’t get so hung up on a problem (or a paragraph) that it kills all motivation for you to progress with your story in life.

Sometimes in order for something to work you HAVE to plunge ahead, even if you face the aftermath of bad reviews (critical people who thought you messed everything up) But sometimes without those “bad” reviews we don’t learn what NOT to do.

How have I learned?

I’ve learned in life to do what I love. JUST DO IT. Stop waiting around for someone else to do it for you, or saying to yourself non-stop ‘I have no motivation.’ The number one reason why you haven’t moved forward is you are stuck on the redraft! Move forward, make mistakes, do something you may later say was stupid. But that’s life!

Life is about choices.

If you make none how will you ever finish the story God has intended for you? The Holy Spirit is our Helper! Ask Him to help you fine tune your story in life, ask for tips, give Him something to work with.

If you have a gift don’t say, ‘I have no motivation’ ask the Holy Spirit who gave you the gift to GIVE You motivation.

Redraft and move forward!

It’s my mom’s birthday today, so I thought I’d dedicate this post to her.

Happy Birthday, Mama!

The older I get in life the more lessons I realize my mom has taught me. I want to focus on just one thing that has rippled through my life since I can remember.

Guarding my heart

◄ Proverbs 4:23 ►
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

It seems like a simple lesson. Guard your heart.

But how many of us guard our hearts on a daily basis? What does that actually mean?

Growing up, Mom guarded our hearts.

  • If we started fighting, she’d guard our hearts from strife.
  • If something yucky came on TV she’d guard our eyes from it.
  • If she didn’t think we should hang out with someone; she’d guard our hearts from them.

Where some may look at guarding as: being over protective etc. As a child I didn’t see it that way, I saw it as Mom’s protecting me. I literally knew things my mom did was for my benefit and not my harm.

Sound like anyone you know?

Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

God guards our hearts.

  • The thing about this guarding heart business is that you have to believe that the one guarding it has your best interest in mind. Even though maybe I didn’t agree with my mom 100% all the time, I knew deep down she was guarding my heart. Now looking back I see all the ways she protected me.

Allow God to guide your heart, and remember, Moms, to guard your babies hearts too!

Happy Easter! How NOT to grow up.

As you grow older, the magic around the holidays feels like it grows stale. When you’re a kid you seriously freak out over sugar. You wake up Easter morning and you run around trying to find the gallons of candy your parents threw in a basket for you.

And you eat everything.

I’ve learned that as I grow older I have to fight to enjoy the holidays. There isn’t that excitement when I wake up, a mystery to discover, candy to consume.

Why?

You can become like that cat up above…grumpy…old. The thing to remember is not to grow up just yet. Hold to the mystery.

  • Find joy in little stuff around the holiday seasons.
  • Find joy in watching others’ joy.

One thing I love is watching my nieces and nephews freak out about stuff. You can give a kid a $1, and they will dance around the room for an hour.

Why do we stop being thankful for the small stuff?

We tend to grow up and realize that the little stuff it just that, LITTLE STUFF. But, when we keep a happy, thankful attitude about even a $1 we keep our hearts open and joyful like a child.

As you travel around, put on those cute Easter dresses, and wear a tie that’s been in the closet for a year, remember to be happy about the little stuff!

Eat a chocolate bunny too.

Happy Easter!!!!

21 Day Brain Detox: I Can, I Have, I Will Do

Day 3-4

I hope you guys are following along with your own personal brain detox as I write these blog posts. I slacked a few days, so I’m making up for it with this post!

If you’re unsure what a “brain detox” is just check out day 2 of mine, and I explain it.

  •  My brain detox I’m focusing on is: I can leave my retail job and do what I love doing.

When you’re doing the brain detox, you’re going to come up against a lot of

  • I don’t
  • I won’t
  • I can’t
  • I never

Those negatives come at each of us. When you go for the root of the problem, a whole lot of gunk comes up along the way.

gty_mud_flats_08_mi_130728_ssh

Even on day 4, I could feel this sticky yuck in my head that was still unbelieving. The roots of our lie can be so strong, that it can take a bit of effort to get these things to die.

Doctor Caroline Leaf says it’s like a tree with a bunch of branches.

The stronger the toxic thought, the more the branches. So something that’s been there for awhile, may feel like more work for you.

nervetrees1

A few things I wrote down on day 3 was:

  • No fear
  • I can
  • I shall
  • I have
  • I will do

Fear will Always Destroy your Crops

In Doc. Caroline Leaf’s studies she said that fear is not natural for us. We are naturally made for LOVE. We learn fear.

FUNNY-FUN-FUN.COM

Have Joy in the Now.

Not “one day”. But now! Sometimes we look at things as “one day” but we don’t really choose to live in that joy, peace, and abundance right now.

It’s almost like we give ourselves a cop out.

  • You can be miserable right now.
  • Be mad at that person.
  • One day you’ll forgive them.

But what is that doing to us? If you read Switch on your Brain or the Gift in You, you’ll see that not dealing with it right then and there is very toxic. Deal with your negative emotions as they HAPPEN.

670px-Gain-Control-of-Your-Emotions-Intro

I’ll be real open with you guys and tell you a thought that popped in my head last night before I went to bed. This thought has come up quite a few times, and it feels tied to so many others.

I feel like I don’t get the things I want or desire.

Sometimes people say things to me that “trigger” an emotional response later on. Someone said something to me and that same negative thought popped up, and I was fighting back my emotion.

  •   The Holy Spirit then asked me, “Do you want to know why you have that thought?”

Of course we always say “yes” but then sometimes inside we are more like…”ugh…..no….”

We don’t Wanna Deal with our Gunk in our Heads.

So, God brings up a memory of mine and says, “You really wanted a Barbie jeep when you were little, really bad, and you saw others get what you wanted, but you never got it.” Then He told me, “I want to give you what you desire.”

When I was around 12 or so, a little girl I knew had one. I remember feeling sad that when I was little I never got one. Again the feelings came up, when my younger siblings got one, but by now I was all grown up.

  • Parents obviously can’t give their kids every single thing they want, but for some reason this event drove a lie in my heart that God didn’t want to give me what I desire, and that others would always get what I love and desire.

I have seen this lie in my life over and over.

What lies are popping up in your head, in your life, in your family, in your marriage? Are you finding the root of those? Are you combating them with the truth of the Word of God?

  • As an “active reach” God showed me getting a Barbie jeep for my birthday and me and my little brother riding around in it.

21 Day Brain Detox: Day 2 (How to Do the Brain Detox)

Day 2

So, I started a new brain detox yesterday and decided that I’m going to try to blog about each day. Today I did my best to keep up with the detox (active reaches throughout the day) which I’ll try to explain how to do in this post.

happy-brain-with-balloon

My negative thought I’m trying to get rid of is, I can’t get out of my retail job because of:

  1. Lack of time and energy
  2. Lack of money
  3. Lack of How-to

If you read my other blog post I talked about what God showed me about the car. Today, I laid down in bed, feeling quite exhausted and did the detox. I listened to see what God would tell me today.

How to Do the 21 Day Brain Detox.
  1. Gather (This is the step where you become aware of what you are thinking and thoughts that are flitting in and out of your head.)
  2. Reflection (This is where you pinpoint a negative thought that came up during the gather stage and choose to work on that thought. You realize this is a “toxic” thought and I want to change it.)
  3. Write (Grab a journal for your detox and start writing whatever pops in your head. You can draw, you can write random words, literally whatever comes in your mind write it down. You want to write a solution for the bad thought as well.).
  4.  Revisit (Read what you wrote and look and see how you can make changes. Start thinking of how you can move out of this negative thought. Work on the “healthy” thought that you want instead of the toxic one.)
  5. Active Reach (Use your imagination for this part, and see the end result of what you desire, get a scripture and bring that into your mind. See Jesus as the solution to the problem, or Him helping you with it etc.)

Yesterday, God showed me that I had this powerful car, and I felt as if I had no gas, no key, and no map. Then He told me to get in the car, showed me that the tank was full, and I had a GPS with my destination, and I was pulling out of the driveway.

That is my “active reach” so I imagine that over and over throughout the day, plus my scripture I’m standing on which is: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Using scripture is extremely powerful with a brain detox. You don’t need 57 scriptures, just do one or two.

Back to today

I lay down and did the brain detox, then I asked the Holy Spirit if He wanted to add anything to what I wrote. He told me, “Expect a harvest from every seed you have sown.”

CW080-Reaping-the-Harvest-of-Righteousness

He told me that I wasn’t expecting Him to give me anything from all the seed I’ve sown throughout my life.

At church last week, He showed me:

  • There is fruit just “waiting” for me to pick.
  • I have to believe that it was mine.
  • I need to receive that fruit from the seed I’ve sown.

I know that God is a giver. I know that God is a good Daddy, but I’ve struggled with this “receiving” thing forever. I know He will take care of me, but I’ve never viewed Him as a LAVISH giver.

God loves to blow our minds.

I encourage you to do this brain detox with me, whatever it is that you want to work on, allow the Holy Spirit to help you! He is our HELPER.

20140819_holyspirithelper3

God told me yesterday, “I don’t want you to beg Me to help you. I’m the helper, that’s my job.”

  • When you struggle with seeing fruit, its because you’re not receiving it. You get a lie that digs into your heart that God doesn’t want to help, that He doesn’t want to bless, and you get stuck with no gas in your car.
Our mind stops up stuff.

Receive the fruit that’s just waiting for you.
